June & July News

Dear Pacific Shore NOW,

So much news, great events and new members.

National NOW Elections

The slate I supported WON!  Geez, I almost never get to say that.

Terry O’Neil will be president and, to me, it means a return to grassroots activism.  Yipee!

NEW June members:

Joey Anetsberger

Lt. Dan Choi

Chrystal Ferber

Beth & Shannon Payne

Hope you will consider growing our chapter and give the gift of a membership.  It is a sliding scale of $40 – $15 and, at the very least it means they can get news about NOW and the movement.  Makes a nice Father’s Day present!

The Times of Harvey Milk is now available on YouTube!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZNGpB9A2js

You will note that there are a lot of women in the "Times of Harvey Milk.;" They were written out of "Milk". Harvey was a leader of everyone, for everyone, with everyone. He loved all people and worked side-by-side with women. Unity is the answer for all minorities.

Finally, if internal NOW politics is your thing ~

Pacific Shore NOW, Hollywood NOW, Long Beach & South Bay NOW and Palm Springs NOW closed the Grievance that was filed and accepted by National NOW against Shelly Mandell for her explicit support of Gov Sarah Palin on the Republican Presidential ticket.  Principally is was filed as this was in direct opposition to the National NOW PAC and NOW’s fundamental priority of Reproductive Freedom.  The matter was solved in mediation and never went to the full grievance process.  You can read more about it on my blog.  http://onlinewithzoe.com

So that is all the news for NOW!

If you watch the media, you know all about Lt Dan Choi, graduate of Westpoint, Arabic translator and fired by the Commander in Chief because he is gay.  He is speaking right here in the OC - and Pacific Shore NOW is proud to support him in defeating DADT.

Marriage Equality Town Hall in Santa Ana, Thursday, May 7 at 7 PM

Times have not been this exciting in the Lesbian and Gay Rights Movement since 1978.  If you watched the movie MILK, better yet, the Life and Times of Harvey Milk, you would know how central Orange County was to the defeat of John Briggs and his Prop 6.  We even have our own beauty queen this time – our Anita Bryant – in Miss California.  And just like Prop 6, justice will prevail.
I hope the activist in all of you is alive and well and ready for some grassroots fun.  Thursday night is a Town Hall (see below)  right here at Santa Ana College.  The speaker list is extraordinary.  I hope to see you there.
We are all looking forward to the DAY OF DECISION when the California Supreme Court tells us if we are as progressive as Iowa and as advanced as our iconic reputation as the most liberal state.  On the DAY OF DECISION I will email you and hope to see you at the Santa Ana Court House to celebrate or demonstrate our dedication to marriage equality.
It is an exciting time to be a progressive activist!

Time: May 7, 2009 from 7pm to 9pm
Location: The Student Lounge, Santa Ana College
Organized By: thecenteroc.org
Event Description: The Supreme Court Marriage Decision Update and Q& A

Confirmed speakers are:
Two of the plaintiffs, Robin Tyler and Diane Olson
Jenny Pizer, Senior Counsel and Marriage Project Director, Lambda Legal, co-counsel in Strauss vs. Horton, the LGBT community's challenge to Prop. 8.

Marc Solomon, Equality California
Jonipher Kwong, California Faith for Equality
Jeff Letourneau, ECCO
Alex Vasqez, Santa Ana College Gay Straight Alliance
Moderated by Ginger Hahn, Executive Director, The Center OC

If this is Decision Day, meeting will be canceled.

Florida Representative Nick Thopmpson Blocks ERA

Thompson Blocks ERA

Constituents of state Rep. Nick Thompson, R-Fort Myers, are furious at his refusal even to hold a fair hearing on the Equal Rights Amendment bill that 88 percent of Floridians, 295,000 voters, seven newspapers, and all 67 county commissions said they want! All countries since WWII have an ERA; 35 of 38 states have vetted and voted for ERA - not Florida.

What's holding up Florida? Rep. Thompson's prejudices. Contact him at (850) 488-1541 or nick.thompson@myfloridahouse.gov
.

ERA is not passed, not dead, not special, not a conspiracy. It is purely for fundamental rights of equal treatment for men (child custody) and women (workplace discrimination). It doesn't regulate same-sex marriage or abortion. It is bipartisan and requires no funding.

HARRIET KNOWLES,  Fort Myers

March ~ Let's make some HISTORY

Dear Pacific NOW & Friends,

There is so much going on right now.  It is exciting and maddening as the conservatives line up to hold their line.  A Democrat in the White House does not mean things are easier, it means our primary leader knows what needs to be done.  He relies on the citizens to influence outcomes.  You can see the cover of FORBES and read that women are being fired first, hired last, paid less.

Hey, pick you battles ~

  • Economics

  • Marriage Equality

  • Reproductive Freedom

  • The Equal Rights Amendment

  • Bush’s HHS Conscience Act goes into effect April 10

A friend told me that the web may be the best way to inform people and contact politicians.  It is what we are asked to do the most.  Nothing replaces a protest or demonstration but don’t underestimate your email, petition and phone call to get things done.

See you on March 4

Candle Wednesday, March 4, 5:30 - 7:00 PM

Fairview Community Church

2525 Fairview Rd

Costa Mesa, CA 92626

Wednesday, March 4 is the day before the California Supreme Court hears oral arguments on the validity of Prop 8. That evening, we’ll stand together and send a unified message to our fellow Californians, including the Supreme Court Justices, that individual liberties like the right to marry are guaranteed by the Constitution to everyone and cannot be stripped away at the ballot box by a bare majority. Just as important, we will give our love and support to all the families headed by same-sex couples who are threatened by the recent electoral outcome, as well as same-sex couples whose hopes and dreams of marriage and family have been frustrated by enactment of Prop 8.

Throughout the evening, musical performers will entertain us, civic and faith leaders will inspire us, and loving couples renewing their vows will move us.

Finally, as dusk turns into night, thousands of Californians at “Eve of Justice” (and thousands of others at similar events across the state) will illuminate the dark with candlelight and pledge together to reaffirm our dedication to equality and justice for all.
